Summary: Assists with the safety, movement, management and care of students with special needs while on a bus. Partners with the assigned driver to provide appropriate transportation services for students.
Essential Duties: (These duties represent a sample and may vary by position.)
Assists the bus driver in managing student behaviors on the bus.
Assists students with loading/unloading the school bus.
Ensures responsible adults meet students leaving the bus.
Operates equipment, including wheelchairs, tie-downs, seat belts, safety vests, safety restraint systems, mechanical lifts and other adaptive equipment as necessary.
Assists driver in ensuring seat belts, safety restraint systems and wheel chair securement straps are secured as required.
Provides written records of any incident that occurs on the bus to the supervisor.
Is alert to conditions in the loading and unloading area which present a danger to students.
Ensures students are appropriately secured in bus.
Required to attend all meetings as directed by transportation staff and meetings scheduled by schools pertaining to position.
Maintains current knowledge of emergency evacuation procedures.
Properly assists and cleans body fluids as necessary.
Assists the bus driver in cleaning and disinfecting the bus interior and with the removal of trash and litter daily.
Performs related duties as assigned.

Minimum Education and Experience
Formal or informal education or training which ensures the ability to read, write and verbally communicate at a level necessary for successful job performance
Must be a minimum of 18 years of age
One year working with children
High school diploma desired
Two years working with children and experience with students with disabilities desired
Knowledge / Skills / Abilities:
Must maintain a high-level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information and about students.
Knowledge of emergency evacuation procedures.
Knowledge of how to properly handle body fluids.
Ability to maintain proper records and documentation necessary for position.
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Demonstrates regular attendance and punctuality.
Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with children, parents, bus driver and school staff.
Ability to maintain order and behavior of children.
Ability to maintain a positive, calm attitude while on the job.
