Job Description

Responsible for the planning and implementation of a program of instructional services provided to students in districts, AIU schools, non-public and charter schools, and approved private schools in order to meet the needs of students who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Provides instruction and support for students in developing auditory, language, speech reading, literacy, communication, and self-advocacy skills in an inclusive educational program. Provides academic support as designated on the student’s IEP.

2. Provides consultative services to school districts regarding hearing loss, its ramifications on learning, and the educational, social, and emotional needs of students with hearing loss.

3. Evaluates students to determine eligibility for Hearing Support services and the appropriate service delivery model.

4. Develops and writes comprehensive evaluation reports, re-evaluation reports, and IEPs following required compliance timelines.

5. Participates in MDT conferences to ensure compliance with PDE regulations regarding students with hearing loss.

6. Monitors student progress based on data collected, work demonstrated, and observation. Prepares progress reports and other state/district mandated paperwork/forms following stated guidelines and timelines.

7. Utilizes best practices, curriculum materials, teaching methods, in planning lessons.

8. Communicates with parents and school district personnel on a regular basis.

9. Prepares detailed daily/weekly schedules, yearly calendar and determines the most efficient travel routes.

10. Completes and submits roster information and updates accurately and in a timely manner.

11. Collaborates with school and administrative personnel to provide accommodations and adaptations to the regular education classroom/curriculum that are appropriate to meet the needs of the student with a hearing loss.

12. Troubleshoots Hearing Assistive Technology (HAT) and collaborates with the Educational Audiologists regarding audiology issues.

13. Collaborates with the educational interpreter regarding communication access.

14. Maintains complete working files of student records including all state mandated forms.

15. Maintains Act 48 hours as required for certification standards in order to keep current in the field of Deaf Education. Participates in staff development opportunities.

16. Ensures and maintains student confidentiality and protects student data in accordance with HIPAA/FERPA regulations and with the AIU policy.

17. Utilizes email, SKYPE, and MS Word, Excel and Power Point to facilitate and expedite communication with parents, faculty, and administration.

18. Maintain a professional demeanor at all times, following all AIU policies, building procedures and Pennsylvania professional code of conduct.

19. Work collaboratively with co-workers; including the proper management of support staff within the classroom.

20. Utilize e-mail, Microsoft Office programs, and student informational systems (i.e. IEP Writer) to manage communication, information and records.

Qualifications - External

Bachelors or Master’s Degree in Deaf Education required
PA Certification in Teacher of the Hearing Impaired required
Highly Qualified status in Reading and/or English desirable
Sign Language skills desirable
PA Driver’s license and reliable transportation required for travel in Allegheny County
Ability to effectively present information and articulately respond to questions from administrators, staff, parents, students, business and educational partners, and the general public
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Self-motivator, independent, cooperative, flexible, creative, and responsible.
Ability and experience working as a member of a team.
Skilled in the use of Microsoft Office Suite including Word, PowerPoint, Access, Excel and Outlook, and willingness to experiment and work with new technologies.
Ability to comply with the AIU Conduct Policy

1. Current Act 114, Act 34 and Act 151 required prior to an offer (Must be dated within 1 year of hire date).

2. School Personnel Health Record and TB Test (Form H511.340) must be completed and received by Human Resources prior to hire date.
