Job Description & RequirementsHours: 2pm - 10:30pm EST; weekends as needed\n\nWill accept local candidates! \n\nPosition Summary:\n\nThe technologist will be the point person for daily operations within the surgical pathology laboratory. Daily decisions are required regarding workload, providing customer service assistance to internal and external parties, handling immediate human resource issues, and meeting the needs of the department’s anatomic pathologists and residents for diagnostic requests and research projects. \n\nA good working knowledge of gross anatomy, histology and immunohistochemistry is desirable. Previous grossing experience is also desirable. Exceptional record keeping skills, and organizational abilities are required to document reagent testing and validity, parallel study analysis between methods, quality control and quality assurance records, documentation of technician training, preventative maintenance and workload activities. Candidate should have comprehensive knowledge of New York State, CAP, and JCAHO regulations and recommendations for a clinical lab. Assessing new techniques/procedures are expected to ensure quality and up-to-date service. Teaching responsibilities include but are not limited to technicians, pathology residents and other department staff. \n\nSupervision and Direction Received:\n\nReceives administrative direction from the Surgical Pathology Chief Supervisor. Receives technical supervision from the Section Supervisor. \n\nSupervision and Direction Exercised:\n\nAs the laboratory senior tech, directs the activities of the evening and overnight techs staff assigned to the Gross Room, Histology, and IHC lab.\n\nInstrument and Equipment:\n\nMicrotomes, stainers, microscopes, chemical reagents and dyes, glassware, measuring, computer equipment and other equipment of similar scope and complexity.\n\n\nTypical Assignments and Responsibilities:\n\nOversee the daily operations of the laboratory. Assess work flow and assign technicians to tasks as needed. 25% \nPerforms all duties related to processing specimens through the laboratory. Gross small biopsies, embedding and microtomy and processes IHC requests. 60%\nPerform competency assessment and training on staff as needed. 10%\nServes as a member of the Surgical Pathology Operations Committee and other ad hoc departmental committees to contribute to the growth and sound management of the unit. 2%\nOther duties as assigned by the Laboratory Director and Chief Supervisor.\n \n\nQualifications\n\n • Medical Technologists License\n\n• 4 years of experience\n\n• Lead/Supervisory experience\n\n• Cytology or histology experience is preferred\n\n
