Direct Support Professional (DSP) – Job Description

Position Title: Direct Support Professional (DSP)
Reports To: Agency Supervisor / Program Manager
Employment Type: Part-Time or Full-Time
Work Location: Client homes and community settings

Position Summary

A Direct Support Professional (DSP) provides hands-on support, supervision, and care to individuals with developmental disabilities, helping them maintain safety, independence, and quality of life. DSPs assist clients with daily living activities, personal care, skill development, community involvement, and health and wellness needs according to each client’s Individual Support Plan (ISP).

Key Responsibilities

1. Personal Care & Daily Living Support

  • Assist with bathing, grooming, dressing, toileting, and hygiene.
  • Support with meal preparation, feeding, and dietary needs.
  • Help with mobility, transfers, and safe ambulation.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe living environment.

2. Skill Building & Independence

  • Encourage clients to build communication, social, and daily living skills.
  • Support clients in reaching ISP goals and independence outcomes.
  • Promote self-advocacy and decision-making.

3. Health & Safety

  • Monitor physical and emotional wellbeing.
  • Follow all medical instructions, including reminders for medications (if permitted).
  • Report any changes in behavior, health status, or environmental risks immediately.
  • Follow all agency safety, infection control, and emergency procedures.

4. Community Integration

  • Support clients in participating in community activities, outings, appointments, and social engagement.
  • Provide transportation as needed using approved agency or personal vehicle (if applicable).

5. Documentation & Communication

  • Accurately complete daily progress notes and data collection.
  • Document activities, incidents, and goal outcomes according to state and agency requirements.
  • Maintain confidentiality (HIPAA compliant).
  • Communicate promptly with supervisors about client needs and concerns.

6. Professional Conduct

  • Treat clients with dignity, respect, and cultural sensitivity.
  • Follow agency policies, state regulations, and BDDS requirements.
  • Participate in required trainings, meetings, and certification updates.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Valid driver’s license preferred (may be required for certain clients).
  • Ability to pass background checks (FSSA/BDDS, fingerprint, CPS, etc.).
  • CPR/First Aid, TB test, and DSP Core Training (or willingness to complete upon hire).
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Patience, reliability, and compassion for individuals with disabilities.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift up to 40–50 lbs as needed.
  • Ability to bend, stand, transport, or assist with mobility tasks.
  • Ability to work in home environments with varying conditions.

Work Environment

  • Client homes, community settings, transportation environments.
  • May require evenings, weekends, or flexible scheduling.
