About the Team:

The Jackalope Studio leads the development of engaging land-based slot machines, contributing to Bluberi’s dynamic R&D department in concert with other development teams across the U.S. and Canada. Our passionate team of seasoned professionals spans multiple disciplines, including mathematics, visual arts, software engineering, game design, audio engineering, and quality assurance. Operating in a hybrid model in Austin TX, we balance seamless collaboration on target hardware with the flexibility to foster creativity and efficiency.

Summary:

Bluberi is seeking a highly motivated individual who has a passion for game development to be part of our Austin team. The Game Designer III provides creative vision and leadership, guiding the game's direction from concept through implementation, while securing stakeholder buy-in. They collaborate across disciplines—including art, sound, engineering, math, product, and marketing—to deliver cohesive, high-quality experiences. They ensure games fit the market, our players, and our business needs. Grounded in player psychology and market trends, they champion innovations that resonate with players and drive performance.

Essential Functions:

  1. Game Design & Concept Development
  2. Drive idea generation efforts and lead team brainstorms, idea workshops, feature prototyping, and game concepting.
  3. Define technical and creative vision for game projects and prototypes, including playability, fun-factor, and unique features.
  4. Establish key math model targets and regularly review math data with mathematics team.
  5. Shepherd games through a feedback process that includes key touchpoints like player testing, focus groups, and internal milestone reviews. Distill feedback into action plans and lead teams through design changes.
  6. Play-test games to verify gameplay and math accuracy. Provide feedback for refinement and improvement.
  7. Collaboration & Communication
  8. Communicate design goals and product status across the organization.
  9. Foster a fun, creative environment for team contributions.
  10. Create and maintain detailed visual aids and design documents to communicate design intent. Support remote collaboration by recording walkthrough videos and presentations and tailor content for both synchronous and asynchronous workflows.
  11. Build strong relationships with designers across studios to exchange ideas, challenge conventions, and share our own learnings—driving best-in-class design and player experiences.

  13. Conduct competitive market research to inform design decisions and share learnings and recent findings with the studio.
  14. Ensure compliance with gaming regulations and standards. Stay current with new market requirements to deliver appropriate design solutions.
  15. Apply UX best practices and heuristics to design intuitive, engaging, and inclusive gaming experiences that reduce friction and cognitive load. Ensure features are accessible and enjoyable across a wide range of player demographics, abilities and play styles.

Travel Required:

  • Ability to travel 5-10% with some international travel (Canada)

Required Education & Experience:

  • College diploma (DEC) or bachelor’s degree in Mathematics, Statistics, Game Design, or equivalent professional experience
  • Advanced knowledge of the casino gaming industry, with a focus on slot player behavior, market trends, and product features
  • Proven experience directing and refining math model development using core principles of combinatorics, probability theory, and statistics
  • Proven ability to communicate complex game choreography, supported by visual references such as wireframes, storyboards, and flowcharts
  • Demonstrated success in pitching game concepts and leading them through development to market release.
  • Good interpersonal and time management skills. Demonstrated success dealing with creative conflict in a consensus-based, collaborative environment.

Preferred Education & Experience:

  • Advanced Excel skills for building and analyzing complex spreadsheets
  • Working familiarity with data visualization tools such as Tableau
  • Proficiency with version control systems (e.g., Git, Azure DevOps)
  • Demonstrated dedication to continuous learning.
